What are tooth extractions?

While we will always do everything we can to save a tooth, there may be circumstances that arise that necessitate the complete removal of a tooth from its place in the gumline. This is called a tooth extraction. Some teeth are extracted because of severe decay, advanced gum disease, or because they have been broken beyond repair. Other teeth may have grown in improperly and have become poorly positioned inside of your mouth; this is common with your third molars, or wisdom teeth. No matter the reason a tooth needs to be extracted, we will provide you with gentle care and multiple cosmetic and restorative options to replace the lost tooth.

How are teeth extracted?

Dr. Kirk E. Kooker, our gentle dentist, will first use anesthesia and sedation to numb your tooth, jawbone, and the gums that surround the affected area. To remove the tooth, we will begin by firmly rocking the tooth in order to widen the tooth socket. You should feel pressure, but not pain. If needed, the tooth may be cut into sections. Dr. Kirk E. Kooker then gently removes the tooth from its place. After your tooth extraction in Plano, Texas, we will provide you with detailed instructions on how to take care of your smile at home.

We will only suggest a tooth extraction if it is absolutely necessary. For more information, please reach out to a member of our dental team today. We are happy help you through this process.
