What is sedation dentistry?

At Dr. Kirk E. Kooker’s dental office, we understand our patients have anxiety and fear when visiting the dentist. Whether it is the sounds and smells that accompany a dental office or a fear of needles and drills, we do not want you to be held back from receiving the dental care you need. That is why we offer our patients high-quality sedation dentistry to ensure you have a pain-free, positive experience each and every time you visit our dental office. Sedation dentistry is the use of medicine and sedatives to help you feel relaxed and calm before, during, and after your appointment.

What is nitrous oxide?

One of the most common forms of sedation dentistry that we offer is nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide is also known as laughing gas because of the euphoric, pleasant feeling it provides. To take effect, nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through your nose. Nitrous oxide begins working within minutes and wears off quickly after your treatment is over.

In Plano, Texas, nitrous oxide is also combined with oral sedation (pill form), to provide deeper sedation for our more apprehensive patients. With this form of sedation, known as conscious sedation, you will need someone to bring you home once treatment is completed. For more information about the forms of sedation we offer, we encourage you to call or visit our dental team today. We want you to have a positive experience each time you visit.
